Adobe Business Catalyst was designed for businesses to create websites without having to worry about back-end coding. That all sounds great, except Adobe announced that they would be discontinuing the service by September 26, 2021. They decided to end the service to focus on making other products, meaning that anyone using Adobe Catalyst will have all of their data deleted and taken offline.

What To Do Now

This kind of loss can be detrimental to a business. So, what now? Adobe said that they encourage customers to download their data and migrate to other systems before the deadline. We recommend migrating to WordPress. WordPress is a great alternative; we use it for our own website and highly recommend it to all our clients. WordPress is an ideal platform to design attractive, versatile, and highly functional websites.

It’s budget-friendly because the software is available for free. There are also thousands of free themes and plugins, so there’s plenty of features. It’s also easy to use, learn, and update. WordPress is particularly helpful for those who don’t want to or don’t know how to do coding.

Migrating Your Site

When migrating a website, you want to make a spreadsheet to help make an inventory of all the pages and their links on the site. That way, you can make sure you have all of your pages. Also, keeping track of all the exact page links helps make sure that you’re matching up the new pages with the previously used links. Sometimes, you will need to change the page links/URLs to a cleaner link. That’s when having a spreadsheet with the pages listed comes in handy.

Also, it’s essential to set up 301 redirects to the new page links. Creating 301 redirects simply tells the web browser to go to a different link/URL instead. So, if someone bookmarks a page on a site that’s being migrated to a new platform and that link was changed, as long as the site manager uses a 301 redirect to direct visitors to the new page link, the bookmark will still work.

Another major factor is that established sites have already been indexed by search engines, like Google and Bing. Periodically, these search engines will go through websites to make sure links are still good and help rank the content for searches. If the old page links are dead, this could negatively impact the site’s SEO.
